Before you embark on your journey in Japan, there are a few essentials you’ll want to ensure you have with you. These items are particularly unique to Japan, and having them on hand can enhance your overall experience.
Here’s a list of items I recommend you carry on you while you explore Japan.
- Handkerchief: More often than not, you might find yourself without access to paper towels or hand dryers, which are not always available in Japanese restrooms. A handkerchief is a practical addition to your backpack or back pocket. It not only serves as a handy tool for drying your hands off but can also come in handy during sweltering summer months.
- Cash: Despite the increasing prevalence of digital transactions worldwide, cash remains king in Japan. Many smaller establishments, including restaurants and shops, operate on a cash-only basis (even taxis and other venues). To avoid any inconvenience, ensure you have an ample supply of cash before heading out. ATMs accepting US debit cards can be found in 7-11s and other shops. Just be aware that ATMs usually require a minimum withdrawal of at least $100 USD, so be careful!
- Trash Bag: In Japan, especially in the larger cities, public areas lack convenient trash cans. Carrying a trash bag can be incredibly useful as you explore, allowing you to neatly store your trash until you find an appropriate disposal point at a convenience store or train station (no one wants to throw random trash into their bag while exploring). It’s a practical solution to prevent loose items from rolling around in your bag.
- IC Card: IC cards are essential for navigating major Japanese cities efficiently. They streamline your experience in subways and save time by eliminating the need to purchase individual tickets and decipher complex maps for each leg of your journey. Always ensure your IC card has sufficient funds for a smooth travel experience.
- Pocket Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi is not commonly available in Japan, except in hotels or large establishments like Starbucks. To stay connected while exploring, consider renting a pocket Wi-Fi device. These devices offer reliable and strong connections, proving to be a tourist’s best friend during their adventures in Japan.
By incorporating these items into your travel preparations, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate Japan’s unique features and make the most of your experience.
