Hama Rikyu Gardens Guide

Hama Rikyu Gardens are a traditional Japanese garden right outside of Shiodome and within walking distance of Tsukiji Fish Market.

Background

Hama Rikyu Gardens are located next to Shiodome and the Ginza areas of Tokyo. The gardens were once the property of a feudal lord during the Edo period. The grounds are now available for the public and consist of multiple gardens with different plant life and include multiple ponds and waterways throughout the gardens.

How to get there

The Gardens is located within a 15-minute walk of Shimbashi Station and just 10 minutes from Shiodome Station (Oedo Line). The Gardens are also within walking distance from Tsukiji and Toyosu Markets.

Tickets

The Gardens cost 300 Yen to enter (about $2-3 USD) and can be bought at the front gate, either from a vending machine or staff at the ticket gates. It’s super inexpensive and worth the price. If you are looking for a tea, there is a tea house at the center of the garden grounds.

Upon arrival

The gardens are open from 9 AM to 5 PM, so make sure you time it right if you want to see the gardens before sunset. The gardens can get pretty busy, but there is more than enough room to spread out and more than enough walking paths to help you find some peace and quiet in busy Tokyo.

Exploring the area

Hama Rikyu Gardens are located in the Ginza Ward, so shopping along with great restaurants and hotels are just a short walk away (along with the Shiodome area). It is also within walking distance of Tsukiji and Toyosu Markets, making it easy to get your morning sushi before you explore the gardens and take in the green while surrounded by the high buildings all around.

Overall thoughts:

Hama Rikyu Gardens are a beautiful green oasis in the middle of the urban sprawl and an escape from the bustling shopping district that is Ginza. Make sure to add this to your itinerary while exploring Ginza, it’s worth the visit.
