Gasparilla is a Tampa tradition that many enjoy and embrace. Downtown Tampa becomes a big, pirate theme party for thousands which can lead to issues if you are not prepared or have an idea of what to do. Here are some quick tips to help prepare you for this Tampa version of Mardi Gras.
Carry cash – If you are bar hopping or buying from street vendors, have some cash on you. There are street vendors, you may have to pay for parking, and you may just want to get some food while roaming around so have cash on you. Technology can slow down, especially if networks are being overused, but having some green on you will always work. It’s just always a good idea before heading out the door.
Beware of traffic (parking and Uber) – With this many people heading into downtown Tampa, traffic is going to be a nightmare along with parking. Don’t park in a lot if you are unsure if it is safe or you may get towed. Uber and other ride share services are available, but they are going to be hard to find with everyone wanting them and beware of the surcharges that can hit due to the high demand.
Make plans – Make a plan. Find a party, know where you are going, and if you are going with a group, pick a spot to meet up if you do get lost. Gasparilla can have around 300,000 people (or more) attending so having a plan is key. Look, cell reception may struggle, your phone may die, so having a plan if things go wrong is key to having a fun yet safe time.
The parade itself – There are two major events during Gasparilla. First is the on-water invasion along Hillsborough River. If you are boating, it’s a mess out there with hundreds of boats and regulations. The second part is the parade that moves along Bayshore BLVD, which is right along Tampa Bay itself. The parade is just that, a parade. It has a bunch of floats that are sponsored by multiple local companies that throw out beads to the gathered crowds. There are bleachers along the route, but those fill up quick and to be honest, the parade is not that exciting so don’t worry if you miss it (while having a few beverages of course). The party tends to expand way beyond the parade itself, so keep that in mind.
Weather – Weather is always a factor in this parade. Sometimes a cold front rolls through, leading to cold temperatures or rainy conditions. These are normal things to note, but when attending an outdoor event, dressed as a pirate, and after a few beverages, they are things that can be overlooked. Don’t do that, instead, check the weather before heading out the door.
Overall, be safe and have fun, it’s quite the party in Tampa during this very festive event.
